Tuesday February 27th

Columbia University – steps of Low Library / 12 noon – press conference

Since 2012, so-called “Right to Work” legislation has been barreling through the city halls of working class states. This has been an assault on organized labor and an attempt to bust unions everywhere Columbia has refused to bargain with its graduate workers and is dragging its feet in contract negotiations with healthcare workers at the student clinic, who are represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East (UHE). On February 27, Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Foundation, will speak at Columbia about the upcoming Supreme Court hearing, AFSCME vs. Janus, which will determine whether Right to Work legislation applies to the public sector. Columbia and Mark Mix are old allies–the National Right to Work Foundation submitted an amicus brief on Columbia’s behalf in the graduate worker case.

-On the eve of the first AFSCME vs Janus hearing, it’s important that workers in New York City stand together. Almost fifty years ago to the day, striking sanitation workers in New York City won a decent contract when other public sector workers stood in solidarity. The Mayor tried to get other public sector unions to scab and they even called in the National Guard, but workers stood together. When we fight together, we win!
