Organizers from across the Metro New York Area announce Justice for Trayvon Martin Assembly, Wednesday August 28, 2013

Organizations announce Wednesday Assembly and a new unity to fight stop and frisk, police brutality, anti-immigrant legislation and all forms of racism

WHAT: Press Conference 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

WHEN: Tuesday. Aug. 27, 2013

WHERE: Steps of City Hall

Many people in the Metropolitan New York area immediately expressed their anger at the verdict of not guilty for George Zimmerman, who shot dead 17 year old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL in 2012. The anger was an expression against the injustice of a man getting off free from having committed murder and at the whole process before and during the trial. It was also in response to the daily horrors of racism, police brutality and stop and frisk in New York. Many young people felt that they could be the next Trayvon Martin, that their lives meant less in the wake of the acquittal and many parents feared the same for their children.

Racial profiling is a daily reality for young people of color and the recent decision by U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin on August 12th shows that the rights of young people of color have been routinely violated and in instances like the killing of Ramarley Graham, Kimani Gray, Sean Bell and others, the result has been deadly.

We also see a parallel between the cases of police brutality, stop and frisk, anti immigrant legislation, devastating wars launched by the U.S. that cause massive suffering and destruction of the countries attacked and the conditions of poverty, unemployment, inadequate housing that exist in many communities of color and see the importance of a unified cross community response. The justice for Trayvon Martin Assembly on Wednesday, August 28th is in this spirit.
